Neurodegenerative diseases are a serious health concern due to increasing aging population worldwide. While studies have unsuccessfully attempted to reduce neurodegeneration by targeting beta-amyloid, increasing evidence suggests that metabolic alterations may precede amyloid deposition. In fact, boosting energy metabolism using metabolic enzymes has been shown to have anti-aging effects. Thus, targeting metabolic enzymes may be a potential avenue for early therapeutic intervention of neurodegenerative diseases.
